Experience the real flavour of Saxon England. From the hierarchy and etiquette of the Lord’s Hall, the story of Beowulf, to the burial of a Saxon king and how archaeologists piece together the information they find on digs, our activity based Saxon workshop brings the period to life.
This interactive workshop explores the story of England from the coming of the Saxons, through to the Battle of Hastings.
Portals to the Past’s Saxon workshop leaders are part of the retinue of King Rædwald appearing regularly at Sutton Hoo, and can speak the Old English language in which Beowulf was written. They have all been involved with staging of the Staffordshire Hoard exhibitions at Tamworth Castle, Stoke Potteries and Birmingham Museum. Up to 90 children can take part in this full day workshop.
Portals to the Past are a highly experienced team of history specialists who work with schools and museums throughout most areas of England.
Always a pleasure to have a visit from Portals: It really helps bring the topic to life for the pupils, and inspires them to research and learn more about the period. Thank you again and see you next year. – Westgate Primary, Suffolk
