Overview

School Architecture Workshops in Schools for all Key Stages and Abilities. Our workshops have been making learning fun for 20 years. Integrated curricular workshops, designed as catalytic support for students and teachers.

Using simple materials pupils engage in problem-solving activities, as individuals and groups, to build large structures in a hall space. The workshops stimulate students’ creative thinking, interpretation, visual problem-solving and team-working skills. Pupils achieve a greater spacial awareness and understanding of the built environment, as well as enriching their knowledge of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Experience

Architecture Workshops have delivered unique site specific workshops throughout the UK; The British Museum Great Court and Elgin Marbles Room, The Science Museum, The Natural History Museum, RIBA Offices, The New Art Gallery, Walsall, The Forum, Norwich, The Pompidou Centre, Paris. The New Museum Of Islamic Art Doha, Qatar. We also undertake a series of free workshops to schools in New Jersey every May.

Testimonials

“We were impressed at how the pupils were given an opportunity to apply various skills in the workshop and were delighted at how much fun they were clearly having. The staff were highly impressed with the quality of the experience and the way the session was run. They have already requested a return visit and we will certainly recommend you to other schools.” Lindsay Fry, Deputy Headteacher, Corsham Primary Sch. Wiltshire

Scarabeus are an aerial theatre company offering drama, dance and physical theatre workshops across England and Scotland.

Overview

Scarabeus Aerial Theatre works with children, young people and families, teaching aerial skills, physical theatre, yoga and stilts and creating high quality, innovative and imaginative participatory performance projects. Our workshops are practical and hands on for young participants—in particular, providing an opportunity for them to be creative, to experience challenge, adventure, risk-taking and personal development in a safe environment.

Our work extends the learning experience beyond the classroom, to make the curriculum more exciting and fun. There are natural links in all their work to PSHE, but often the theatre work provides the best opportunities for cross-curricular learning, linking to literacy, DT science and art. Developing greater confidence, trust skills and teamwork is all a part of the journey, which, in turn, helps pupils become interested in learning.

These projects can be delivered during term-time, after hours and during school holidays. Other options and commissions are possible according to the needs of your school and young people.

Experience

Previous projects have included:

Beyond Flying – A major project with Chingford Foundation School that used aerial work and theatre to help young people express their experiences of violence and bullying.

The Seagull and the Cat Who Taught Her to Fly – Working with Year 5 students, this project took the acclaimed novel by Luis Sepulveda and recreated it as an original promenade performance in different locations around the school, tackling issues of difference and achieving goals that at first seem impossible through teamwork.

Feather Boy – A project to help young people with the transition from primary school to secondary school, which worked closely with the school to link the process of creation of the piece to the curriculum, involving the popular children’s author of the Feather Boy, Nicky Singer.

Airborne Families – A parental engagement scheme, run in conjunction with Unclassified Arts, that has run in over 40 London schools, and encourages bonding between children and parents through theatre games, yoga and aerial techniques.

Testimonials

“Scarabeus promoted the importance of risk-taking for participants—taking the children out of their comfort zone. The outcomes of the project were outstanding.” – Lawrence Price, Head of Keys Meadow Primary School

“The children loved linking work in the classroom to the theatre performance—reading results have rocketed.” – Andrea Koutsou, Year 5 teacher at Hargrave Park Primary School

“Our experience with Scarabeus was unequivocally successful.” – Mark Morrel, Head of Chingford Foundation Secondary School

Karen Rann runs Art Workshops in the North East, Cumbria, Yorkshire and the Borders. She has worked on a huge variety of projects both in this country and across Europe (she speaks German). She has worked as a Creative Agent and Practitioner for Creative Partnerships. Continue reading →

Overview

Karen is interested in developing bespoke, solution based approaches to making art and working in schools. Situations requiring innovative creative responses range from suspending a dancer from the side of a building in Hungary, to making maths more creative and engaging for first and middle school children in Cumbria.

Creative solutions to sites include: a skirt for a volcano, sun-umbrella sculptures for a beach, a seascape for a skylight in a school. As a socially engaged artist Karen enjoys working with others -particularly schools and community groups – so creativity is a shared experience with the making process and results owned by the children and adults whom the work will mean most to.

Experience

Karen has worked on a huge variety of projects both in this country and across Europe (she speaks German). She has worked as a Creative Agent and Practitioner for Creative Partnerships and is involved with KulturKontakt, Austria through the European project: Artists in Creative Education.
She is a member of the Baltic Centre for Contemorary Art freelance artist team and works for the charity VARC with two schools for children with autism.
Many of her school projects include CPD sessions for staff.

Karen finds bespoke solutions working with staff and children to identify aims for a project before researching materials and approaches. She is as happy working for a day (creating bugs to float on water), a week (architectural designs for an outdoor classroom), over a term (working with children to design a sculpture for their school). Or supporting children in achieving the Arts Award.

Testimonials

“Just wanted to say another big thank you for the session on Wednesday; it was like therapy. I feel inspired, motivated and a more worthy teacher. My colleagues, were very impressed (and very jealous) that I had experienced such a valuable day. “ – Angela Robinson, Art Teacher, Ryton Comprehensive (response to CPD session)

“Love the sculpture! The children really felt they were given ownership of the artwork from the beginning and encouraged to self-evaluate and collaborate to improve and refine. In terms of the school, the opportunity for the children to work alongside you has been really valuable. They feel proud that their work is on display in the form of a ‘real’ work of art.” – Bethan Smith, Head, Framwellgate Moor Primary School, Durham

“Karen is brilliant! she gave us ideas which we would never have dreamed of. We learnt a lot, we really liked her coming and she boosted my confidence in art up a level.“ – Rebecca, year 6, Star of the Sea RC Primary School, Whitley Bay

Overview

I am a visual artist and I work with people of all ages including early years. I often make kites and banners and things related to the wind. I am particularly interested in working outside with children using natural materials, developing scientific and philosophical theories as we go along. I would like to see how much of the curriculum can be delivered through digging a hole and filling it in again!

My arts skills include silk painting, kite making, video, digital art, using recycled materials and installation, but I also make bread and dig allotments and light fires and feel that these skills are just as applicable in supporting the school curriculum and learning at all ages. I run training sessions for teachers as well as activity based workshops for children. Each of these can be designed to suit the needs of the particular group.

Experience

As an artist I run workshops in a variety of different visual art based activities – silk painting, banner making, fire-lighting, willow plating, mural painting, sand sculpture, bridge building and kite making. Through Infinite Arts I can bring in a team of artist as required.

Kite-making
I am a kite maker with an international reputation who receives invitations to kite festivals in other countries. In the UK I run kite-making workshops in schools involving all ages and covering various aspects of the curriculum. Kites can cross the divide between arts and science. They can support the teaching of mathematics and can help introduce the history and geography of other countries and other cultures. Kites can be the channel for learning and communication between different ages and different cultures. There is opportunity for action research alongside traditional research and study of the subject. Much of the learning can take place out of doors and it will have happened before the learners have realised they are learning. In a recent project in New Hartley First School,

Silk Painting
I work with pupils to make banners, bunting and other items using silk, china silk and silk paints. I focus on ‘design to production’ encouraging pupils to work and rework their ideas before final production, to collaborate and to be critical of their own work.

Fire project
Working as artist in Residence in Peases West Primary School, I worked with each class to design, build and light fires. Pupils thought about safety, explored different materials and documented their results using photography and video.

Testimonials

“It was so wonderful for the children to be able to make something and see it fly. Children were so engaged from the very beginning. They were fascinated that their own creations flew so well. 60 children running excitedly onto our field with a kite in their hand made the entire school stop and stare. The children were talking about it for weeks!” Gwen McCormack, Heavers Farm primary school, Croydon

“Pauline Taylor & Infinite Arts have provided an excellent service with integrity and depth. I would not hesitate in confirming their capacity and ability to perform to a very high standard, undertaken with flair and expertise.” Pauline Moger
